I believe that ghosts COULD exist, but it's quite unlikely. Even if they did, what's the big deal? They couldn't harm anyone; they would just be spirits. I don't get why everyone thinks of ghosts as "scary". Anyway, I think that might be what Martin the Warrior's spirit is supposed to be. It depends if Brian Jacques believed in ghosts or not. If he didn't believe in ghosts, then I don't know what he's supposed to be
Are you saying Ghosts could exist in the Redwall world or our world?
Hehe, I can sense a juicy discussion coming up! Mind if I join? *Pitches tent on topic* ;D
No, I was just wondering if she was talking about ghosts existing in our world or in the Redwall World.
Still, sounds like an intresting subject! You should start a topic about it.
Why Not! It would go in Cavern hole right?

If it was about ghosts in Redwall, it would go in General Discussions.

Gonff the Mousethief

I want the world of Tolkien,
The message of Lewis;
The adventure of Jacques,
And the heart of Milne.
But I want the originality of me.

Oliver Swiftstream

Much like wandering spirits IRL (depending on your religious beliefs or other beliefs) Martin is allowed to be in the living plane of existence or he's stuck in that plane until his work is done. Much like stories of ghosts where they are trapped until they complete unfinished business, Martin is either there on his own free will, or is trapped until his work is done with the Abbey. That's what I think anyways, just my opinion. :P

Unless the Abbey is completely destroyed, or eternal peace within Mossflower happens, then I believe that Martin's work is not finished. Thus he cannot pass on beyond the Dark Forest into whatever realm all the Heroes of Mossflower end up when they die.

Kitsune

If you remember in Outcast of Redwall, Sunflash was bitten by the snake and "died". But when he was about to enter the Dark Forest, the badger "guard" told him that his work wasn't done, and he sent him back. Maybe that badger lets Martin leave so he can help the Redwallers.

That is a very interesting theory. Going back to what Oliver said, I think its possible that Martin knew that the creatures would need his help, and is staying on the living plane of existence through the kindness he had when he was alive, giving up rest in the Dark Forest to help those in need.
Cave of Skarzs

Cave potato.

Stonestripe

Here is my Goofy spin on it. I think in the Dark forest there is a place akin to Valhala where the warriors go after they die. Like  in The Long Patrol Russano the baby sees Warriors of the past not only standing before him but also welcoming the newly slain Warriors. In countless books the badgers see the warriors of past (Not just Badger Lords cause they usually see Martin there too) in dreams.
"Defend the weak, protect both young and old, never desert your friends. Give justice to all, be fearless in battle and always ready to defend the right."

—The law of Badger Lords"
