The classic question of forums everywhere.

BTW: I voted for ninjas.

Pirates. They look cooler, have great gravelly voices, and they sing better as evidenced by a couple songs by Captain Skurvy in the "Donkey Kong Country" cartoon ("Pirate's Scorn" and "Booty Boogie"). Yeah the DKC cartoon's painful for me to look at, but Skurvy made it worthwhile. In the realm of pirate songs I also like "Professional Pirates" from the Muppets Treasure Island movie. It has Tim Curry as lead singer. And of course no discussion of pirates is complete without mentioning Captain Jack Sparrow from the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. You can't help but pay attention to him.

So I prefer pirates because they have more personality.

I voted Ninjas, just because I love stealth and shadows. Sneaking around scaring my siblings is fun, whereas it's kinda hard to scare people if you're a four-foot-tall pirate with a wooden sword.

Captain Epicbeard was aboard the most epic ship in all history: The 8th Wonder.  Most people avoided him by miles.
But Ninjas are not most people.
A huge group of shadowy figures leapt on to The 8th Wonder, hurling Kunais and Shurikens in all directions. Yet Captain Epicbeard's crew were just as terrifying as he was and they proved this by charging through the storm of ninja stars, holding their swords up high.
Of course, this left their chests unprotected, and so each ninja pulled out a shining katana and pierced it through the beastly crew members' chests. Captain Epicbeard watched as each of his loyal pirates were easily killed. That was when he realized that these ninjas were no ordinary people. In fact, he wasn't if sure if they actually were people.
He didn't care what they were though. He unsheathed his legendary sword Ninjadeath, the most terrifying most powerful sword ever known. It even made the ninjas slightly shudder. It was made of the metal from ninjas' Shurikens that he had stolen in the past, and was shaped so it was the sharpest blade in creation. The hilt had a sparkling emerald with a golden outline.
He stood and waited for the ninjas to attack.
After a long silence, each ninja hurled a Shuriken or Kunai, but all were reflected of into the sea by Ninjadeath so each ninja ran wielding their katanas.
The collision was epic. Katanas clashed onto Ninjadeath. Several Ninjas were killed. But then Epicbeard froze.
He had just been killed by a ninja from behind.

NINJAS WIN!

As y'all have all but admitted, the only thing that ninjas do is strike when people's defenses are down, and/or stab them in the back.

I don't know about you, but from where I come from, if a normal person did that, he wouldn't be applauded as a hero, he'd be called out for what he is -- a craven sneak!

That is why pirates will forever reign supreme over ninjas. :)

Pirates still exist today -- I admit they're not cool like they used to be, but they're still here, so obviously pirates > ninjas in longevity.

Also, just look at Redwall itself and we can see that pirates trump ninjas.

For pirates, we have great villains like Cluny the Scourge (who was an ex-corsair), Gabool the Wild, Rasconza, Tramun Clogg, and for that matter, Plugg Firetail.

For ninjas, we have Mokkan and Zwilt the Shade. Oh, and I guess technically the Wraith, who got accidentally killed by an otter rockcream, counts too.

I rest my case.

Not all. Me and my friends have made paper ninja weapons, and ninja masks made from T-shirts. Unfortunately a group of samurai came to. Luckily they are all six year old girls.  So we spend our time battling them.

Buzzkill Bragoon is a buzzkill.
The question I always ask is whether you mean the common conception about ninjas, or the real ninjas?

Ninja's were assassins and backstabbers, not enigmatic masters of myriad martial arts and weapons.  Nobody trusted them because they weren't to be trusted.  They'd just as soon stab you in the back as another person.  They might have known certain styles of martial arts and used unique weapons, but when people talk about ninjas running up walls and dashing across rooftops, they're wrong.
Any samurai or solid fighter in a Japanese army would know just as much, if not more, about martial arts as a ninja (on average, surely there were some specialized people in each party), and they almost certainly would know more about fighting with traditional weapons as a ninja.  Ninjas weren't trusted because they resorted to subterfuge and deceit to kill, not their masterful fighting skills.

Pirates, on the other hand, were dreaded by many seafarers for thousands of years.  They fought, killed, and stole for a living, and if you weren't good enough at any of those things, you weren't going to be a pirate for very long, and I don't mean due to a career change.  They learned tricks to lure other ships into a sense of false security so that they could get close enough to do what they did best.  Granted, most pirates wouldn't challenge a ship carrying soldiers and cannon, but some would for sure.
No ninja would challenge a samurai to a straight fight.  Pirates did it for a living.  I'm going with pirates, thanks.

You may be right, Bragoon. Things are always better in stories than in real life. And nobody can run up a wall. :D
But pirates were just as bad. They did awful things which don't get put in the kids' books, and anyway, there are hardly any of them now. You might not like ninjas for what they actuallly did, but pirates stole, murdered, burned buildings, plundered, and ruined peoples' lives. How can you go with pirates?

You have to realize that pirates actually lived a pretty rough life. They usually had little to eat and went cold. Poor pirates.
At least pirates still had some honor about them. They didn't hide in the shadows and wait until your back was turned to murder you. Pirates at least could look in the face while fighting.

i have a katana i can use it on watermelons with incredible speed, ninjas didnt always murder
Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Post by: Bragoon on February 01, 2012, 01:16:01 AM
It depends on your definition of murder.  I would say yes, they did (perhaps almost) always murder, since they rarely fought in wars because they were for or against a side, they fought as mercenaries for whoever would hire them.  They weren't protecting anything, they were only killing for money.

Pirates pretty much always murdered too, I'm just pointing out that neither side is justified in that course.

It all depends on what the weapon was made for.  A Katana is a weapon for swift strikes, whereas a Broadsword is built for heavy blows.

Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Post by: Bragoon on February 01, 2012, 05:20:32 PM
I know too, since I've handled both.  Again, it depends on what you're going to use it for.  If I'm going to fight a man in plate and chain armor (as in 15th century European), I would much rather have a Broadsword, because a Katana isn't going to make it through the armor, despite all of it's famed sharpness.  If I'm going to fight a man in leather armor (as in Japanese man-at-arms armor), I would much rather have a Katana, because, like you said, a Broadsword can be unwieldy, and a Katana could cut through that.

It's really going to be the chain armor that stops the Katana.  Chain-mail was specifically designed to stop blades, and it did it very well, resulting in the style of battles that took place around the era it was worn - whoever could incapacitate more of the enemy's force won, not whoever could actually kill more of their men.  That's why weapons like maces were developed, because they were going to have a hard time making it through all the armor to cut anyways, so there was no reason not to just cut to the chase and be rid of the man.

Precisely.  Another example of this is that I wouldn't want to use a Katana in a fight on a pirate ship.  A Katana has a midland-long blade, meant for slashing.  A cutlass that might be used by a pirate is shorter, because you can't be swinging  out and wide in a cramped, close-quarters fight with both enemies and allies all around you.

Actually no, a Katana is by definition a slashing weapon.  A small stabbing weapon is called a knife, but those come in lots of varieties.   :P

i dont know exactly all the types of sword but that is a very short katana ment for stabbing or close range slashing
Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Post by: Bragoon on February 01, 2012, 07:10:36 PM
It can't really be both, since a stabbing blade is made two-edged, and therefore wider.  Also, Katanas are exclusively single-edged.

Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas

It's too short to be a Katana.  There are Katana-like knives, but a true Katana is a full-on sword.

It's not peer pressure, it's being Tiria's friend, and actually preferring a ninja's weapons over pirates. Think about it:

Pirates: Cannons, sometimes swords, guns, poison, rum bottles, battering rams.

Ninjas: Katanas, shuriken, stealth, garrote, poison, daggers, knives, sabers.

then it's peer pressure.  One should never give up what they believe and can reason to be right just because their friends tell them to.  That's a big thing about being a Christian, God isn't popular and many people, even people who you may count as friends, will tell you that it's ridiculous to believe in Him.

But again, if you can come up with good reasons for changing your mind (like the ones you provided just now), I'm all for it.  ^^

Ninjas had more discipline, and more self-respect. I'm quoting Winston Churchill on this, but I have been brought up to have utter contempt for people who get drunk.
Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Post by: Bragoon on February 04, 2012, 10:40:26 PM
I don't know about the self-respect thing.  Ninjas existed and were employed in a time heavily depending on a man's honor, and that was reflected in his profession, diligence, family, and so on.  The lifestyle that ninjas took on was extremely shameful in that culture, so they were dipping themselves as low as possible.  Many samurai would infinitely rather be a peasant than a backstabber.

Would you mind telling where you get this information, Bragoon?
Pirates were not the 'arr-me-hearties' people you think of. They were usually men who turned to the "sweet trade" because they weren't useful for anything else. Most pirates were just drunken slobs, which is a bad thing in itself, but occasionally there was a clever, calculating pirate captain, and those were the most dangerous ones.
They stole from people, sold them as slaves, and tortured their captives horribly. I would rather be a backstabber than be a pirate who pulls the flesh from the bones of their captives. No way.

You need some knowledge about the sea to become a pirate, its not like the captains going to let some drunk bums on his crew.

QuoteThey stole from people,

Ninjas kill people.

QuoteSold them as slaves,

Most people rather become slaves than dying.

Quoteand tortured their captives horribly. I would rather be a backstabber than be a pirate who pulls the flesh from the bones of their captives. No way.

Why would pirates torture captives? Nobody is going to buy a slave with their bones hanging out. A beating would be the worst thing to happen to the captives.

Quotei would also rather be a backstabber then a drunken idjit

Again a person had to be at least somewhat competent to become a pirate and its not like you have to be a genius to kill someone is his sleep.

If I had to hang out with a pre 1800 hundred pirate or ninja for a week, I would pick the pirate easy.

Pirates may not be the most pleasant of people but I think everybody should give them some respect. These guys lived in horrid conditions.

If they had to defecate, they would go in a bucket.

If they wanted go to sleep, they have to put up with the ships rocking.

If they were hungry, they would have to scarf down stale bread.

If they get sick, they will probably die horribly far from home.

And if they get attacked by marines, they either get hung or incinerated. There wasn't going to be a painless death for them.

All a ninja has to worry about is, if they get caught killing someone.

What I meant was that they would torture people trying to get info from them. Also, I think you pirate supporters have looked up ninjas and not pirates. By all means, look up pirates, and find out what dirty, swearing, murdering people they are.
Ninjas probably only killed their enemies. Pirates killed anyone they thought needed killing. Also, I would rather be killed in my sleep (ninja method) than die from being tortured and whipped (pirate method). At least ninja victims got a simple, no-fuss death.
There are still some pirates nowdays, and they are every bit as ruthless as they are in stories. There are hardly any ninjas. Sure, there are some people who know ninja skills, but no one goes around being a ninja anymore. That, however, does not mean ninjas are not as good. QuoteWhat I meant was that they would torture people trying to get info from them.

What info? Who to rob? Where the buried treasure is? Pirates will raid any ship they can easily overwhelm. The only information that they want from their captives is their background, and a slight beating is all it takes.

QuoteAlso, I think you pirate supporters have looked up ninjas and not pirates. By all means, look up pirates, and find out what dirty, swearing, murdering people they are.

Both are undoubtedly unpleasant people, the diffrence is I can respect a tough sailor the same cannot be said for a cutthroat.

QuoteNinjas probably only killed their enemies.

Ninja's killed for money; not a cause.

QuotePirates killed anyone they thought needed killing.

In other words they would kill anyone that was a threat to them.

QuoteAlso, I would rather be killed in my sleep (ninja method) than die from being tortured and whipped (pirate method). At least ninja victims got a simple, no-fuss death.

Again most pirates preferred live captives over dead ones, anybody that resisted capture would probably perish from a stab to the belly or a bullet to the head.

QuoteThere are still some pirates nowdays, and they are every bit as ruthless as they are in stories. There are hardly any ninjas. Sure, there are some people who know ninja skills, but no one goes around being a ninja anymore.

Ninja's are basically assasins, and they are plenty of hitmen left in the world.

Bah. Tis pirates for me, mate! A ninja, in both the culture of the Shogunate and High Imperial periods, ninja were looked down as cutthroats and cowards. They used fear tactics and psychological warfare to make opponents superstitiously fearful of them. For goodness' sake, even NOBUNAGA ODA thought they were cowardly vermin!

Pirates, on the other hand, had a --- somewhat --- legitimate reason for what they did. Most pirates were privateers, independent contractors given temporary military commission by legitimate governments against foreign powers. Sir Francis Drake was a national hero in England, for all that he stole from the Spanish merchant fleets. America's first real "navy" was a ragtag bunch of pirates hired by Congress with French money to fight the British.  John Paul Jones was a Scotch ship captain who sold his guns to America because he despised the British. (He was Scots, after all!)

Many pirates were people who found their governments oppressive. "Black Bart" left England because he had Methodist leanings, which were not popular in Anglican Britain. Anne Bonney (my 16th great-grandmother) left England because of English mistreatment of the Irish.

Pirates were the first to form their own republic in the Americas. If you were a crewman serving under the flag of the Brethren (a skull with two crossed swords, they were used ficticiously in Pirates of the Carib., as the basis of the Brethren Court) you were guaranteed what amounted to healthcare, a pension, and a cut of the profits on any venture. That was much better than what you got as a swabby even in the British Navy, the finest military unit on the sea.

I still hate pirates. They're CRIMINALS, for goodness sake!

"Criminal", in the sense that they stole and robbed "innocent" merchant fleets of their valuables, yes. Usually a pirate would do  everything in his or her power to keep casualties to a minimum. Murdering megalomaniacs like Blackbeard were theexception, not the rule.

But here's another fact about the Brotherhood. Pirates sailing under the Skull & Sabers HATED slave merchants. If they came across a slaver (a legitimate economic endeavor in any legitimate port  >:( >:( >:( >:(), they would execute the crew, free the slaves to sail under their own power, and provide the liberated "cargo" with ammunition, weapons, and whatever provisions they had to spare.

PIRATES ARE AWESOME

Makes sense to me.  The reason many pirates chose that lifestyle was because they saw freedom and a chance for monetary gain, both of which were rare in their days.  It would only make sense for them to feel even more strongly about those who completely removed both of those elements from a person's life.

Space Marine.  For all intents and purposes, they're superhumans.  Stack that with the armor, not to mention the gun, and you've got trouble.  Poor ninja never had a chance.

The Space Marines are a faction in a miniatures game, which has had movies, books, and videogames made on the same universe, called Warhammer 40,000.
My dad loves it, and has done tons of research on all the different lore and such of the game, and that trickles down to me.  I tried to get into it, but I don't have the patience for painting, so I gave it up.

Yes, well, a runner would POTENTIALLY have a better chance than a space marine, due to the ability to pop in and out wherever he wants. However, an Adeptus Astartes warrior would be able to pinpoint the runner's position anyway thanks to his superhuman reflexes, and boltergun. KLICK-CHAK BOOM!
Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas

a what? is that another name for them?  or is it a specific type or what?  must have not read that part. also, whats a boltergun?  i am incredibly confused.  well, okay, it kind of depends on weather its the one you like best, or the one you think would win in a battle. for the latter space marines, for the first I'm going with runners because I've played Mirror's Edge, but not Warhammer 40,000
Title: Re: Pirates vs. Ninjas
Post by: White One6193 on May 22, 2012, 04:15:40 PM
Adeptus Astartes is the official title of the Space Marine in High Gothic. High Gothic is the Latin dialect spoken by all members of the Imperium of Man. A Space Marine is the MOST elite warrior in the Imperium. He is genetically engineered from birth to be superior to all men, to face the alien and the heretic with absolute defiance and hatred. He is raised in the harshest environments, exposed to the cruelest conditions, before he is even allowed to join. In the Space Wolves Chapter, your physical body actually has to die in order to be accepted into the Valhal training program.

He is given the finest weapons and armor. The boltergun is one of these. Weighing in at just under 50 pounds, this pistol is the finest piece of engineering you've ever seen. Powered by a fusion cell power core, it can fire .90 cal. rounds at a rate of 3000 per second.

Oh, and "Adeptus Astartes"? In real Latin, that means "Master of Slaughter" ;D

The poor runner didn't even have a chance to blink.

I vote pirates. First clicking on this topic, I couldn't decide. However, as a neutral party, the arguments for pirates are much better. It seems to me that pirate supporters did research and knew what they were talking about, where as most of the ninja supporters just liked the ninjas' weapons and/or had disliked pirates for no particular reason.

Besides, pirates are better musicians and poets, plus they steriotypically had really cool accents.

No, actually. Pirates were also mercenaries and often told to raid certain other nations. Ninjas were assassins and criminals. Pirates had the dignity to face their opponents in a fair fight. Ninjas just snuck up behind them and stabbed them in the back. An honourable person would become a samurai or legal fighter. Ninjas were outlaws.

Since there are many tropes and misconceptions on ninjas, let me entertain you with some historical facts:

Contrary to popular belief, real ninjas wore BLUE, not BLACK.

Ninjas were known to always carry these six items:
A Straw Hat: Ninjas need to keep a low profile while they are out, so they wear a typical straw hat which helps them blend in and also conceals their face.
A Grappling Hook: Besides being used to reach high areas, grappling hooks can also be used in tying enemies, locking doors, or even as a weapon if need be.
Graphite/Chalk: Ninjas needed a way to take notes or chart out enemy positions, so they always carried a parchment and a graphite or chalk.
Medicine: Ninjas had to be in top form when out on assignments, so they carry homemade medicine with them just in case they start to feel sick.
Flint/Fire-Starter: Ninjas use fire to cause distractions, such as setting a small building on fire to distract guards, so they always carry a fire-starter. Also used to start a campfire to keep warm at night.
Three-Foot-Cloth: Used to conceal their face, mask their face from smoke, or even use it as a tripwire.

The katanas was not the primary weapons of ninjas as it was too expensive to own and make. They are more likely to have used homemade tools such as the kamas or sickles.

Ninjas had 7 disguises, which include:

Komuso (Monks that wear baskets on their head)
Buddhist Monks
Yamabushi (Mountain hermits)
Merchants
Actors
Street entertainers
Casual (Believe it or not, ninjas sometimes just walk around in plain sight)

Hit me with more ninja questions.

Due to their secretive nature, the exact numbers of ninjas were not recorded. But it would be safe to say that there was hundreds of ninjas in the entire course of history.

There were 49 schools of ninja in Japan, the two most famous being the Iga and the Koga/Koka.

The Koga/Koka clan consisted of 53 families with one head family, who worked together as a single group.

In the Iga clan there were many lone-wolf schools.

There are a few times were ninja numbers were recorded: During the Edo Period, Tokugawa Ieyasu employed 80 Koga/Koka clan members to raid a rival outpost. Another time, several few hundred Koga/Koka members helped the soldiers of Torii Mototada in defending Fushimi Castle.

Several famous/legendary ninjas that I could think of include:
Hattori Hanzo
Ishikawa Goemon
Mochizuki Chiyome
Sugitani Zenjubo

Ahem, I was just warming up with simple historical facts.

I could have talked about how ninjas used egg shells to make smoke bombs to disorient enemies,

or how certain shurikens can be used as punching weapons,

or how Mushin helps clears one's mind from all emotions and distractions giving them better awareness,

or about the Kuji-In hand gestures helps calm one's mind,

or how ninjas can curl up and hide in plain sight,

or how the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu was done either by having having several ninja dressed the same way to keep their enemies from guessing how many people are actually there, or by setting up scarecrows dressed in the same way as the ninja,

or how when ninjas were caught, they were buried to their necks in sand, then stabbed with sharpened bamboo poles...

...and more.

But this is supposed to be a talk about Pirates vs Ninjas

I agree. That much action on LTTT(BNNYD) would be much more constructive.

Although we should complete LTTTBNNYD, at the rate we're going.

Back on topic: it depends exactly what the question is asking, really. Whether it's which one you like better, what you'd rather be, which one is better. Which do you prefer, seems to be the question.
