I'm glad that discipline is being shown. (Hopefully, I haven't been a large part toward this decisive enforcement of rules.) I also hope no one here is too badly put out, as I am fine with it.

For shame Brook, for shame. :P ;D Also kind of turned off by your reference to "rounds," as those are often the less interesting RP's, too much disrupted flow plus the "cut & dry," atmosphere isn't really for me. Still, it's a roleplay tournament, can't exactly skip out on that.
All that said, I'm significantly worried that this could kill all the "active," RP's as the RP tournament often does.

Wow, okay; didn't think the changes would take place so suddenly.
I must say I saw this coming; his other works are worthy of praise, despite their lack of it, and the forum did need a bit of a change for a bit.
I would like to ask: Will the RP board still stay up on its usual place? Not only would it be hard to do a role-play in the world of the Castaways due to the real-life events they take place in, and the characters staying the same throughout the whole series, but it would be strange to compress such a large board into the confines that the Redwall boards will be in.

We would like for people to appreciate Mr. Jacques' Castaways series in the same way that they have his mice books, down to making RPs in the same setting, but the RP board will continue to be run as it has been. If you have a RP based on the mice books, that RP will remain open, and you can make new RPs based on them as well.
Okay look, I'm having a difficult time not blowing a stack right now. What's the name of the site? Redwallabbey.com! I came here to talk about Redwall, people find this site because of Redwall, now you're one step away from taking Redwall out of it! From what you've described, ALL things Redwall are being reduced to EVEN LESS than what's currently up for Jaques secondary works. Who thinks of Castaways when you say the name Brian Jaques? I don't know anyone who does, unless I'm missing something, this is absolutely outrageous!

What you've mentioned, the lack of recognition for Mr. Jacques' other works, is exactly what we would like to remedy. We've set the mice books on a pedestal for a long time, but he's written more and done more than just that. Rest assured, though, that there will always be a place to discuss all of Mr. Jacques' works here. We aren't removing anything from this page, we're simply moving the spotlight to focus on another part of his work, namely, Castaways.
As far as the sub-board goes, it's necessary that we do it that way, to prevent the hundreds of topics currently in the book discussion forums from drowning out all the discussion about Ghostly Tales, Urso Brunov, etc.
Hang on a sec, nevermind, I knew the April Fools thing started with the ridiculous names and such, but is this seriously the theme? Even as a joke I personally don't think something like this is appropriate. Making a joke about a forum take over is fine, but making a joke out of changing everything the Forum has stood for all these years isn't right.

Out of curiosity, who actually reads the Castaway books? I got one awhile back, but never read it.
I read the first two, Castaways of the Flying Dutchman and Angel's Command, and while I enjoyed those, the third one kinda never grew on me, so I didn't finish it. I can recommend Angel's Command, as that one was the best of the two I read.
I just finished the 1st one and am getting the 2nd one today ;).
I read most of the first one, but got bored with that and just went on to read the two others. From what I can remember, I think The Angel's Command was the best, though the third one was good too. (I really need to reread them...)
I've read all three; I didn't like Voyage of Slaves (the third one) as much as the first two but I still enjoyed them all.
Danflor, if it matters to you, I highly recommend the books; they're filled with the humour, songs, and adventures that I love in the Redwall books. I love all three of the Castaways books, though I wish I knew more about the pair's adventures prior to 1896. The ship's failed voyage and the mission entrusted to Ben and Ned by the angel is an interesting and wonderful premise for the series.

Is it just me, or are the ranks a bit inconsistent? Like, some people with 5 stars have "Redwall Recorder" while others have "Abbey Gardener". I know it's not a big deal, but...wow, I'm curious.
You don't always get a new star with a new rank (we thought having one star per rank would get gaudy).
Are the new ranks based solely on post count, or do they vary depending on where you post the most?
Everything is based off of post-count, though you can't get counted posts from the Cellars, the Front Lawns, or Forum Games.
I know that it worked that way before, but seeing as how there are now more ranks and more than one rank per star, it seemed possible that they had something to do with where you had posted.

Having gone over the awards topic again (was trying to figure out what the blue pawprint meant) I have noticed something that I would classify as a mistake: "If you paste and award in your signature and you did not win it, there will be strict consequences." Before I read this line, I had no desire to paste an award into my signature, but my morbid curiosity is attempting to make me do so. So I must ask, what would these strict consequences be? If you do not wish to reveal it publicly, could I be PMed?

It isn't really about having a specific 36x36 pixel (or whatever size it is) image in their sig, it's about disrespecting the staff, the members who put in the work to earn those awards, the challenges, and the rules -- in short, the entire culture of the forum.
That said, most rule violations result in a warning. If the warning didn't take, we would probably edit the image out of their signature. If they insisted on bringing it back, despite warnings, I'd suspect there would be a temporary gag in that user's future (in addition to re-editing the image out). Anything after that, I'll leave to your imagination.

I was wondering, based on the announcement wording, do you just select randomly based on who you think can come up with a name or is it a sort of tournament via PM? Not sure how to make that not sounds bitter...but I'm just curious! :)
Personally I have no idea. I think the staff are just like "Who would make a good season namer?" and then start naming off names until they get to someone they agree on.

Since I've been back, what typically happens is that one of the more active staff members posts up a list of some of the candidates they think had the most positive impact on the forum over the past three months, and the other staff vote their preference, from those recommendations. Quality and quantity of contributions, and lack of controversial interactions with other members are both considered, with preference given to the latter.
Finally, it is worth noting that staff members' memories aren't perfect, and the earlier somebody's accomplishments are, the more easily they'll be forgotten. If somebody is a difference-maker in, say, June, but is less active in July and August, I suspect they're less likely to get picked for Autumn Season Namer than somebody who was less active the first two months, and heated up in August. We don't intentionally try to weight it that way, but all the same, your odds of being picked are probably better if you peak right before Season Nameday.
I bet it is difficult to choose, considering how many qualified forum members there are!

This is the topic to respond or comment on any announcements on the forum, like changes that members do not like, or congratulating nominations for moderators or season namers.
In regards to the logo contest, the submissions would need to be in color, correct?
They could also be desaturated; white, black or gray entries are perfectly fine. Just so long as they look good on a web page, and more specifically, on the menu bar.

So far, none. I hope y'all pick up the pace. We don't want it to default to someone like it did in one of the last contests.

The passive-aggressive jabs in the most recent post in the Logo topic are not appreciated. Some people are too busy to make a logo, some people have no skill, and some people have no inclination, and that should be fine. We're under no obligation to create a logo. And there's no specific reason that the site should have a logo anyway. Sure it'd be nice to have one, but it's hardly a necessity. Berating people for not joining an optional contest is, quite frankly, very rude.
@Søren: CONGRATULATIONS! You deserve the win and the recognition, and your logo is truly great :)

Ahahah...I have a little story to tell about my adventures in the Logo Contest.

I have limited experience in graphic design and am frankly not good at it. However, when I heard about the contest, I thought participating would be a great opportunity to try new things and help the forum.
After half an hour of working in Photoshop and Paint, I retrieved feedback from a classmate who's good at technology. She suggested some improvements, which I made. Then, looking at the newer design, she suggested more improvements.
By that point, I was a bit discouraged in my abilities, and some reasoning led me to conclude that "perhaps it's better to leave the contest with people who actually know what they're doing". Hey, at least the hour I had spent had achieved the "try new things" part of my goal.
Looking back, I'm pretty disappointed in myself for not submitting an entry anyway. But I've made enough mistakes by now to (try to) not dwell on them when they come. If there were to be another contest, it's likely I would give it another try.
Oh on! I missread the deadline date and thought it was April 23! I have my entry sitting next to me, I was planning on posting it either today or tomorrow. I've had a flood of things to due these past weeks and had just found the time to do it yesterday. Would you still like me to send it to you?

It must have been too big, then, because I remember seeing something about that once.
Despite being a supporter of the shout box, I must acknowledge it's removal has had a noticeable positive impact on pretty much all of the other boards.
It's a great feature, but I think the right decision was made on this one. ;)
All the joking aside, it's going to take some time for all of us who've been really active there to get used to it, I think. We'll give it some time, and see where we are.

With the introduction of old forum awards, we need an RP tournament and/or a dueling roulette. Lots of good RPers weren't able to participate since they weren't active or members at the time.
These are my quick thoughts on the situation: we probably don't want to do a RP tournament right now, as there's already some great RPs and we don't want anything that would take away attention from those.
A duelling roulette, however, sounds quite possible and shouldn't be too time-consuming or remove the focus from anything (especially since there haven't been many duels lately). I'll drop a word by the rest of the staff and see when they think it would be a good time to do this.

Have you tried using the wayback machine (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://redwallabbey.com/forum/)? If the page is saved, it might be possible to access some of your old works.
That wayback machine is bittersweet. I found one in which I was Season Namer and another when I posted in 2012.

1. A week or so before I joined.
2. In december, when the forum was down.

@Groddil: Just saying, the way the Wayback categorizes snapshots is kinda weird. "redwallabbey.com/forum" and "redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php" count as two completely different urls, for example, unless you choose to crawl all urls under that domain. Try this list. (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://redwallabbey.com/forum/*) I don't know if it's possible to search for keywords or not, but you might be able to find it.
EDIT: If you type in "topic=" without quotes in the search box right by the list, it should bring up only saved topics, not avatars or anything else, so that's handy.
The stuff I want most was in Secret Hideouts but you can't log in. :(

I assumed the entire forum went down for some administration reason, which in effect redwallabbey.com-meldown II. I was away from home all day, totally baffled as to why the forum was down again. When I got home had to go to the discord conversation to see what was up. Did I miss something?
I posted up an announcement topic about it yesterday (with the same name as the one that's up here, New Server Hosting). It is true I didn't give a lot of advance notice, though. That's just because I figured that the announcement would take care of most of it, and it wouldn't be down long enough to justify anything more (like a mail out or something). I guess I could have waited a few days to let the news digest before I made the change, but I was excited about the opportunity and didn't want to wait.
I was a little concerned when I couldn't get the site to work yesterday but at least there was a good reason and it hadn't just crashed...again.
How did Galli get a link to the new forum though? Did you post it in the Discord before her or...?
When I saw that 404 error all day yesterday, I was sure the forum was gone forever.

I haven't spent much time trying to figure it out yet; if I had to guess, I think it'd be because of the way the forum encodes things. Even though it has all the same data, this isn't technically the same forum as the last one (I installed SMF 2.0.12 fresh along the lines of getting things set up here). And if isn't the same forum, then it can't unencode the attachment strings.
There's nothing to worry about, though. I can access the pictures and they look fine; if my theory's right, it's just that the forum doesn't know how to access them, because it's looking for the wrong names. If I can't fix it, then I'll post up all the pictures somewhere so that y'all can get them back up again, manually.

You have to search for "Loamhedge Forum" or "Loamhedge Abbey Forum."
Although it didn't do well when I left town Friday, checking it on my phone right now with Google (with StartPage to a avoid personalized results), Bing, and DuckDuckGo, it does appear on the first page, performing quite competitively in some cases. I think there should be an option to unthank (It's not a real word, I know.) posts, so that you can remove your thing if you accidentally thank something really inappropriate.
I turned that on; try it.
I don't feel that the signature restrictions are necessary. I usually just skip past them.
On the other hand, I never access the site from a mobile so it could be more annoying there I suppose.
If we have signature image restrictions, I don't see what's wrong with having font size restrictions or restrictions on the number of lines. It can overload the page just as much as large images, albeit in a more subtle way. And if it saves nothing else, it'll eventually save a lifetime in the time spent scrolling pages.

I'm able to thank and unthank posts now, but does anyone else get logged out when they try to do it? When I tried to unthank a post I had to log back in, find the post, and then I could unthank it. Same when I wanted to thank it again.
When I put this little ghosty dude in my sig, I set him to size 30 font, the largest allowed in signatures. It seems fair to me. I don't get the complaints about things always needing to be bigger.

I looked through a bunch of people's signatures and the ones that looked the best to me fit within that range. It seemed like a nice, sensible length, leaving room for expression without being overpowering.
If the trouble is that part of that space is taken up by your Season Nameday badges, perhaps we can find an alternative way of displaying them that doesn't interfere with your signature space.
Perhaps a second box for signature "images", just for images. It'd have its own size limit.

As of now, I can't change my signature since I have those two pictures. All I would have to do is edit out one line anyways.
EDIT: I also can't change my profile pic because of this.
When I changed my profile pic it just comes up blank no matter what image I use.
I softened up the hard-coded signature limit, for the purpose of letting those with badges use those. The 7 text line thing still applies, though, and if you put in a really long thing with lots of text, expect the signature police to drop by sooner or later. ;)

Firstly, because people don't. They post about it on the forum, even if it's suggested that they do otherwise.
But even if they did, it's come to my attention that quite a few people don't know how to discuss these subjects properly, and end up throwing Ad hominem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem) attacks at each other. We really don't want to encourage having those kinds of fights anywhere, hidden or not. I'm hoping that this will be something of an educational experience, teaching all of us how to converse intelligently and respectfully about subjects that other people might disagree with us on.
Secondly, I think there's a desire for people to hear all of their online friends' thoughts on
all kinds of subjects. Sure, people PM with individual friends, but that's not the same as a group discussion with a variety of inputs. Right now, they can't do that because every topic on anything remotely controversial degrades into a fight. I'm hoping that this board can change that.
Remember that this decision still hinges on how the new board is received by the wider community. A lot of our members do have an evident to discuss these sorts of topics, and it's of the staff's opinion that, when kept at a respectful tone, these sorts of discussions can be really beneficial to those involved. I know for myself that talking to people with widely different opinions to my own has helped me to understand the world in a much clearer light, and to not staunchly demonise anyone who doesn't share my own beliefs. They can really help build one's ability to sympathise/empathise. We're hoping that this board will satisfy this desire while making sure things don't boil over and end up how they did before. With all that said, if things turn sour or if the demand isn't there, we'll be sure to pull the plug. I have faith in the maturity of you all, though. :)

It's very much a staff-run board, more so than any of the other ones on the forum. There are disadvantages to that (as the person who's posted an as of yet unapproved topic on the board knows ;) ), as the speed that your content gets up depends on the speed that the staff are able to react and make decisions regarding it. I'm hoping the weaknesses in the system will be balanced out by its strengths.

Anyway, I think the basics are the same. Go to History and try to clear it. If you poke around, there should be an advanced setting that allows you to pick certain things to clear. The one you want is "Cached images and files" or something like that.

I had an idea as far as merging the two forums go. That said, though, it would work best if nobody posted on the old forum until I'm done, and I'm not sure that's viable. ;)
We've been looking forward to this for a long time. Sometimes I wondered if I'd ever see it again, but some people's work paid off in spades.
Incidentally, I would remind our members that if you have anything you want to save for posterity, now is the time to back it up. The old forum shouldn't be going anywhere now, but in case there's any bumps in the road ahead, you'll be glad to have them saved elsewhere.
It fills my heart with joy seeing you all so excited upon having the old forum back up. It was kind of an uphill battle, but we got there :)

Everything seems to be working alright for me, but don't forget that the webmaster is working the board and that causes all sorts of errors to come out.

I hope we're not giving awards to people based on past actions. Someone who is no longer an active member doesn't deserve an award over an active member.
When we give awards, we're looking to give them out to people that are deserving. In some cases, those members might have done their best work before the awards came along, or before we started passing them out as generously as we have been over the past few months. We feel that retroactive awards are a good way to respect our forum's history and the members that've made our forum what it is today. If you look back at previous award cycles, we've often given awards to inactive members, usually one or two per cycle. This is just the first time there's been so many of them.

We actually have given out awards to members who have been inactive before, even if they weren't inactive for such a long period of time. HiaG and Jasper got awards in the July award cycle, as well as Mhera (albeit not too long after she left). The same with Free Thought. We felt it was time to have some more of them, from further back. Not actually having the RAF made that difficult, but now that it's up for us to look at, it facilitated the process of more retroactive awards.
You guys are way too paranoid.
Giving awards to those members was heavily overdue at this point, as their contributions to the old forum AND community were simply huge. We might have come a little late to the party for this particular case(s), but that doesn't make any of them any less deserving of the recognition. Chances are they started the topics you like the most or suggested the changes you truly enjoy.
Besides, clumsy manipulation reveals some sort of unearned arrogance ("look how easily we tricked you, look how easy you are to fool"). Putting this up on April Fools was nothing more than a happy accident -which, in turn, allowed for some pretty spectacular fireworks as you all putted on your detective hats-.

Well, the reason why we expanded them in the first place is because of a quirk with the merger tool we're forced to use. It doesn't recognize child boards when it merges the forums, so it was either that, or lose everything in all of the child boards, which of course we weren't keen on happening. ;)
As far as the merits of some boards as 'full' boards or child boards, it's something that could be considered, I suppose. We haven't really given it much thought since the individual boards were established back in the RAF days. I doubt Pop. Forum Games will ever be listed next to Forum Games, given that they're about basically the same thing, but one could certainly make a case for rearranging some of the other boards. Perhaps we can talk about it when there's not so much stuff on the agenda.
Talking about the boards being more spread out would be nice sometime later, and I'm glad it's only temporary, because the board index looks cluttered and confusing. Not a fan.
Also you mentioned something about the bricks being permanent in the Tweaks and Changes at some point in the future? Is that to be across all the themes?

The bricks are featured only in the Default and Modified theme styles. I've left them out of Classic and Loamhedge, given that they clearly weren't a part of the original forum's design, and that they're a recent innovation on the Loamhedge forum and not the "traditional" look of things here.
Now, if people are clamoring to have them everywhere (which I think might very well be possible after the art is finalized for them ;) ), we can certainly consider adding them in at that time, but at present there are no plans to introduce the bricks to the other theme styles.
I don't mean this opinion to sound so negative.
It wouldn't be a good use of time to introduce the bricks to other theme styles. Those of us who use the other themes do so because we like the look of them as they are. If we all wanted to see the bricks, we'd all use the Modified theme.

It gives the forum a cluttered and shallow appearance, versus the compact but layered setup that existed before. It was still quick and easy to get around the subboards because of the drop-down menu in the bottom-right corner, so is it any more than a cosmetic change?

It's worth noting that the bricks also appear in Default, not just Modified.
The expanded boards are a temporary measure necessary to facilitate the merger, thanks to an error in the tool that we use. Once the merger is done, the boards will be restored to their parent-child layout, as always before.

That's because of the upcoming Forum Merger.
The tools we are using cannot detect chill boards for some reason and they would get ignored as a result. We will get the old structure back as soon as everything's set up properly on the RACF.
Man, I cannot even try to convey home amazing this all is. You guys did a wonderful job with this and brings back so many memories that it is hard to comprehend. I wish I could do more than just say thank you, I truly do. But thank you for doing this for us; it means the world.

Wait.. I realize that there are little things here and there that will be sorted out in time, but nearly all my PMs from the past year+ are gone. I had them sorted into folders by sender and the folders don't appear to have made it through the merger. The few unsorted PMs I had did make it, though. @James Gryphon is there any way to get these folders back? I know you don't go through others' private messages but I wouldn't mind you doing it if it'd mean getting them back.
EDIT: It's all right; they're there. They just were merged so that folder 1 on Loamhedge (Kit) was merged with folder 1 on Redwall (Mhera), and so on, which makes sense, but what doesn't is that some PMs from members ended up in the folder of the same name (like Sky and Blaggut) and buried PMs from other members, but I sorted through every page and found everything that I expected and hoped would be there. :D
I, like any other sane person, am glad about this new development.

Oh, I know, and I myself plan on making more than one. Still, I was just mentioning that because it's a bit like a potluck: often, when there is a list of foods to bring, there always ends up being more of one thing and sometimes none of another.
I'm not sure what the progress on the banner images has been, but I thought I'd drop a message by that after research in website design, the banner project is being changed up a bit. The dimensions should now be 300 by 150. I think this gives you a little more room to work with in terms of creative freedom. If you want to see where it's going to be on the page, have a look at the current Loamhedge design; the placeholder graphic there is where the finished banners should be. I'm sorry for the abrupt change without warning; it occurred to me after release, though, that the plan I had was suboptimal in terms of presentation.

I was doing a little bit of judging ahead of time and planning out some "what-if" scenarios. It is absolutely within the realm of possibility that someone who hasn't posted a single thing yet could come back and take it all with a few wins! Think of it: if one person overtakes the current leader in an event, the old leader will
lose their bonus points for winning and the new winner will

Lol we wanted the contest to be really easy to take part in, so lots of people got points - even if they weren't trying to. Winning was a bit of a harder thing to accomplish, though. So everything evened out in the end :)

The plan when I first started to do the installation was to keep the flags. I actually installed them along with the rest of the mods. The trouble came up when I looked and saw that the old bug of displaying '00' when people haven't selected a flag was back. It was at that point when I decided that it was not worth the trouble of keeping them in.
Removing thanks is, I expect, the most controversial change. I will take full responsibility for this, as it's not something that I discussed in depth with all the other staff, although I did talk about it to Sierra a bit. Y'all deserve an honest answer, so I'll do my best to give it.
I was antsy about going forward with the thanks feature for some time anyway. I've not been entirely happy with the effect I think it's had on the forum, which is reducing the amount of thankfulness and appreciation that people write in response to others. Reducing all of that to pressing a button is a trend borrowed from social networking, and in my opinion, not a positive one. This feature was somewhat 'gamified' even at the beginning -- some of y'all with long memories might recall that it originally came with its own stats, which were turned off shortly afterwards when we decided the stats were not a good feature for this community. Since then, I've drifted towards thinking the same about the feature on the whole.
This isn't because of technical reasons. I did wonder for a little bit if it might have been a slight pain to reinstall. After all, I remembered having a little bit of trouble with it during Core. I did a trial run of installing it, though, and it turned out that it would have installed just fine. I didn't test it out after the trial, so I suppose it might have had some problem lingering under the hood, but I doubt it. The reason for getting rid of it was the other one, not because it didn't work correctly.
It occurred to me after the fact that the like feature does have another benefit, one that I hadn't considered at the time I decided to remove it. People do use thanked posts as something of a bookmarks list, to look over their 'favorites' again. This was not something that had crossed my mind when I evaluated the feature, and if it had, I very likely would have done things differently. Not announcing this aspect of the change and giving you the opportunity to save those lists was a great mistake. I did that incorrectly and have to take the blame for it. For what it's worth, if you look closely, the functionality was actually sorta there before. What I changed for the threads and boards was to put the "Who's viewing this board/thread" into the "Who's Online" box, so that it has a consistent appearance. There is a quick link to the Who's Online page, which is new, but the same functionality is in there now that was there before.

This might not be well known, but if you click the logo, that actually serves the same functionality as the home button.

The usernames and section names could stand a tweak in size, I think. I've noticed some cases where they are too large, and mean to look at doing that.
As far as the font itself goes, I know it takes some getting used to. In your case, you're using grey, so I can't blame it on the backgrounds, as tempting as that might be. I thought of using Verdana, the old font, but the trouble is that it looked ugly to me at larger sizes. Georgia might not be perfect, but Verdana was even worse. That said, that was on different backgrounds, and color makes a difference. The text entry box still uses Verdana, and it looks okay to me there -- albeit typing it, not reading it.
I will change the background color, but I'm curious what y'all think of the new body font and if you have any suggestions as to its improvement. Perhaps I'll post up some pictures with side-by-side comparisons for y'all to look at.

I wondered if I could find a place to put the banner in. I ended up leaving it out because I figured that doing so would save space, and that it's somewhat superfluous -- after all, people know what site this is -- but that decision needn't be set in stone. I don't think putting it up top is a good idea, for the same reasons, but I could make the 'lookbox' (who's online) smaller and put it on the left or the right side of that.

Thanks for your honest feedback. I know that not all of this is popular, and there will probably be some understandable irritation in response to some of this. All I can say is that I did what I felt was best for the forum at the time, and that I hope the positive changes going forward will outweigh that which was lost.

I spent most of last night attempting to sort this out, but honestly I feel sorry for those who didn't get a chance to do this. And considering the
huge size of the forum, going back might not always be a legitimate possibility :(
Would temporarily re-installing the mod allow everyone to access their old thanked posts again, or is the data completely lost?

It appears that there are now TWO boxes: once at the top, and once at the bottom, both of them with the same content. This seems to me like pointless redundancy, like with the news.

The text font doesn't bother me a whole lot, just the size. That and the color changes of the background are distracting, as I said before. Everything else I will be able to adapt to.

One way I use thanks is to show someone I saw their post, like with my Mafia. If someone doesn't want to bother saying something, seeing them like it is a good way to gauge how many people know that PMs had been sent, or something of the like.
Made some tweaks (refresh the page to get the new CSS file) to help mitigate the last post bug. It is better than it was before, but it isn't perfect yet. I hope to keep working at it until it's good.
The double diamond thing looks as SMF wants it to; if you opened the image in a new tab, it's a separate icon.

I mostly agree with the decision to remove the thanks button. There was a topic created a while ago that was a very meta in-depth look at an aspect of how people interact online, and how to improve it. Even after being moved to a part of the board where more people would see it, basically no one responded to it, just thanked it. (Including myself.) I think there was one reply, and people just thanked that to show their agreement.... I think this topic could've become a really interesting discussion had people not been able to easily just click the button to give it a thumbs up.
The "saving posts" idea is super valid, and I echo Chip and Rosie in wondering if there would be a way to "bookmark" a post to save and not have it show up on the post itself. A super weird workaround to this would be to have some system of manually "tagging" posts. Then the list of your saved posts would be public in a "tags" section, but you could tag them with something obscure so that it's only relevant to you.

Hey, I'm not really an active mod, but I do agree with all the changes here. That old background with the parchment would load funny depending on where I tried to load the forum from. Glad that's not the default anymore.
Also, getting rid of "thanks" is a great move. I posted a couple of things the past week, and I guess people were thanking them. Why??? Because I said something funny? Why not talk to me, or say "hey good to see you again" or "haha, that's Lutra being funny again" or something like that. That's conversation. Upvoting is not conversation nor does it really say anything. Its lazy. Forums aren't for lazy things. Forums are for messages, and posts, and thoughts. :)

+ The theme has been changed to a new one based on Curve, SMF 2's default theme, rather than Core, its alternate. There are a lot of changes, but one that should stick out to you the end user are the new drop-down menus present in some parts of the interface.
The new buttons are just kind of dull. The old ones had character, these are just typical and condense everything into fewer buttons, which leaves more blank space, which looks worse.

I agree with Chipster. Also I would like to say that consulting Sierra, who does not even use the forum in a general capacity, just seems silly. This isn't something anyone asked for and means that not only have people lost posts that they've thanked, but also lost posts thanked by other users.
- Tagging system removed.
That seems like a good idea. No one really used it.
Overall I feel that when implementing aesthetic and functional changes you should always consult the community first. It basically just feels like you're editing things to suit what you want without any thought to what the users of the forum think.

Well, the purpose of the design is to be more conducive to smaller window sizes, instead of breaking altogether, which was a distinct possibility before. Something of a first step towards mobile design -- not exactly 'responsive', but rather 'pre-shrunk'.
If you think adding icons in the same style as the old ones would help, that's a possibility. I'd thought about it earlier on, but they didn't make it into the final product. No reason that has to remain the case, though.

Well, something I think you're overlooking here is that the alternating colors themselves are a substitute for the borders. The borders were meant to partition and separate space -- so does having large spaces of different-colored backgrounds.
Borders are something I spent weeks agonizing over, as anyone who is in my development circle can tell you. At length, I decided that it wasn't worth the time to implement for the main theme, if I couldn't do them right in the amount of time I had to work on it. The Classic and Minimal themes can get away with the borders they have because they're modeled on an appearance that is, shall we say, less than perfect. For the default theme, though, if it wasn't perfect, I wasn't inclined to do it. As it is, there's
still a lot of rough edges in Default in spite of my time investment, but hacking together ugly borders are unlikely to have helped those much.

If by "too wide" you mean it's "wider than it was on SMF 1.1 RAF", that's possible, I suppose. The purpose this time around was not to have perfect fidelity, but to make something in the same style and general look of that, which it is.
That said, I've seen a *lot* of SMF 1.1, both back in the day and quite recently. I know what it looks like if anybody here does. Given the difference in font sizes, buttons and other foundational interface elements which I wasn't going to change, I don't think it is dramatically different in effect from the Classic style. If you want to go to Archive.org and look it up and compare them, feel free -- I've done it myself, for hours.

I'm not entirely sure at this point whether you're referring to width, or height. The lookbox shrinks and grows with the width of the window, like the rest of the interface. But I'm willing to make it smaller again, as it was for quite a while during the LAF testing process.

Yeah, I found that problem out pretty quickly. I want to make the big titles smaller in general, and probably do something with line-height. I read a lot of jazz about the "Golden Ratio" in typography but didn't get to applying it in the pressure to get something out the door. Perhaps that's something that can work its way into the design more.

If the webmaster of the site made these changes, everyone would just have to live with it. In fact, they have before, and I don't remember him ever asking anyone for feedback, when the RAF was originally made or afterwards. The fact that I've been as available as I have all this time for the community doesn't mean that now
I am obligated to go above and beyond to keep everyone happy (as if that was ever possible, which, as I have found out, it is not).

About this, I think both Jet and James make valid points. It is true that getting majority approval for every single detail is really inefficient. It is also true that the LAF has been up, allowing anyone to "preview" upcoming changes before they happened.
However, I think that making a massive change that cannot be reversed (such as removing the thanking feature, since the data was lost), should be more widely discussed. I've been through a few similar situations, and the results were rarely positive.
That said, we will probably all get used to the new thank-less forum in a while. The forum survived for five (?) years without it, we'll be fine.
I wold prefer that the profile, help, and logout buttons be lower on the screen.
You asked for any complaints, and I had complaints. I'm not just complaining for the sake of it, you know. This isn't a personal attack. In case you've forgotten, you also made the last theme of this forum, which I liked.
Generally I think of the Loamhedge forum as derelict. You certainly did not advertise that you were testing anything big or tell people they should give feedback, so acting like it was an obvious thing to do is incredibly disingenuous. And yes, while often websites are redesigned and the users have no say, the users still complain even when there's nobody listening.
Explaining why things have been done the way they are is not addressing complaints. And I fail to see how moving Who's Online makes the forum more mobile friendly (which, speaking as someone who has accessed the forum on mobile on several occasions, it basically already was).
It's not unreasonable to be annoyed about a perfectly functioning theme being trashed (and not even saved as a possible alternate theme) in favour of something that looks worse.

Hmm, my first reaction was that I didn't like it, but I think it's starting to grow on me...
My biggest complaint would be that it isn't as "Redwall-y" as the previous theme. The other theme had more of a Redwall vibe, whereas this theme seems more modern and streamlined. I don't really care for the large boxes of dull brown color--I quite liked the previous mottled background. It was a little more engaging to the eye. A different color scheme (maybe some dusty/sandstone red to add Redwall-iness?) or some borders to break up all that open space might make it less bland.
Eh, don't love the font either, to be honest. Or the fact that everything but the actual posts is in a different font.
Also, the help, etc. buttons at the top are...not my favorite. Hard pass on rounded corners. ;)
The announcement banner seems a little out of place. Maybe make it maroon like the PM banner?

I have just seen the new changes properly (not on mobile) for the first time and I am.... Honestly? A bit appalled and even a little repulsed. I can and have gotten past the Thanking feature being removed, although I do wish that had been more thought out. I'm going to have to write a better, more in depth, post when I have time and have been able to think things over and not say something stupid although I would like to address one thing:

You wanna maybe list some active examples? Chipster and Tumbler are the only two you just named that haven't left and how often is Twinny (Tumbler) on?
Also, how many people knew that LAF was still up and getting changes? I did, but do you ever think I ever thought about checking it? No. I didn't even really know you were doing stuff. You could have made a quick announcement post and said "hey I need feedback can yall take a look at this?" Your defense of being open and transparent falls a wee bit flat when you don't bother broadcasting anything.
Series of revisions that should clear up lingering problems, including the mobile issue. Refresh your pages, if you haven't yet, to make sure that you get the full effect of the updates.

All I'm asking now is that if there's any new major changes coming again, although I doubt it now, either don't tell us anything, make us stick with it, and tell us to live with the new changes (i.e. The sort of developers James mentioned a few posts back) or let us know there's changes coming and ask us to go look at them on Loamhedge. Please don't bring up examples of long inactive members when you say "oh but I've asked people in the past to look at things, like *enternamehere*" and please don't say something to the effect of "oh but these changes have been up on Loamhedge, you could have looked sooner! I'm so transparent with my work!" when most of the active members are unaware that things are being done. I don't know if that makes sense or is repetitive, but you can't say stuff like that and expect me, at all, to not go "nope nope nopitty nope nope" when it wasn't broadcasted. Friggin' pick one, yeah? And it's not open and transparent if people aren't aware. That sort of thing is one thing that truly irks and frustrates me.

Because I'm weird I always had the Loamhedge Abbey Forum up on another tab after the main forum one, but I don't think manybeasts here were always doing it too. The reason why the forum-in-the-box feature is broken is because newer versions of SMF after 2.0.13 disabled forums running in frames, for security reasons. This is unfortunate for the way the main Redwall site is set up, but I honestly don't think very many people use it in that mode these days, so I'm inclined to write the problem off.

This misconception makes me think that I should have presented the announcement in a different order.
The site as it was had two big problems.
First, it was stuck at SMF 2.0.13, where it had been since Loamhedge.
The changes to the forum I had made at that time made it inconvenient to upgrade. So, all of the bug and security patches that had been applied since roughly May 2017 were not in effect, and weren't going to be until I had the opportunity to make some serious changes to the backend.
Secondly, the old theme was based on "Core".
When I first set up Loamhedge in December '15 (after the old site went down, and had been broken before that attempting to run a theme made for SMF 1.1 on SMF 2), I chose that theme as a basis for the RAF because I felt it was simpler and looked like the original RAF theme than the alternative, which also happened to be the Default theme for SMF 2, "Curve", and that it would be easier to configure. At the time, I figured that this was the best way to get the forum to look the way it ought to reasonably quickly. What I didn't know is that Core is something of a second-class citizen when it comes to modifications, and that you're lucky to get a mod that works with it out of the box. If I had been aware of that then, I would have probably bit the bullet and gone with the newer theme, and spent a little more time when it was all said and done setting it up. As it was, nobody on the forum knew it, so I spent about a year building on an outdated foundation, to have to redo the changes when I realized the inherent advantages of the new theme sometime quite later.
To the end user, things looked fine as they were. On the backend, though, that was not the case. The fact that the forum wasn't down, or obviously broken with text not showing up where it should have and vice versa, doesn't mean that there wasn't a problem.

When/if SMF 2.1 comes out and is ready for day to day use, there will probably be a need to change eventually, but I project that to be years away, most likely. We'll see what the future holds and if I'll be available to work on it at that time.

If I change things, I get 'I hate everything about the forum now'. I have to admit that I don't think it's very fair, after having done things that a lot of people hate, when I do have the good grace to admit my mistake and change them, for that to also be wrong.
The reference to 'long inactive members', as you say, is to show that this is a trend that has gone on for quite some time. Besides, these changes had been in the works long enough that a number of those people actually would have had the opportunity to see them, or else something very like them.
In the last regular post made at Loamhedge over a year ago, I said that it would be up for testing purposes in the future. I then made references to work on the forum on Discord in the time in between then and now, showed pictures of takes on themes, and asked people to look at the board then (by which time it was already very different from the old theme, looking very much like the theme that came up a few days ago that so many hated).
It's true that I didn't talk about it for a while because of school, and because nothing much was happening during that time -- just attempts to fix minor display glitches (like with all those border problems), but I had talked about it a fair amount before that. Recently, I also made an announcement 7:43 PM, before the upgrade process actually began around 3 AM or so, which mentioned both that the theme was going to be changed and that it was "from Loamhedge", though I grant that 8 hours in advance is not a lot of time for people in different time zones. I admit there could have been more publicity, but I think this shows there was still quite a bit as it was.
There's several reasons why I didn't talk more about what the upgrade would entail immediately in advance of it being shipped. Some of them are as follows: The sake of time -- with real life pressures, my goal was to get it out and be done with RAF work as quickly as possible, something that obviously did not happen quite as expected. Second, I wasn't going to not upgrade the forum or change the theme to Curve, so I didn't see the point in getting feedback about that. This was shortsighted in that there were still changes to the look and feel of the place that turned out to be controversial. I
had talked to a few people about that recently, of course, especially Chipster, but this set
was a limited sample size for the most extensive visual changes since the Modified theme was created. Third, since retiring from active forum life, I've preferred to stay away from active correspondence here, an attitude that was self-evidently errant since not doing so before led to a lot more of it being necessary later.
All that said, there were two definite large blunders during the upgrade process. Firstly, the quick removal of the thanks feature, with the destruction of data in the process. I believe removing it as it was was the correct decision, but removing it so decisively so quickly was not. I'm sorry about that, and hope that in time y'all will be able to forgive my error.
Secondly, the initial Default theme was a bigger deviation from the old norm than was necessary. When I was actively developing the forum day to day, I learned that people have certain expectations for what it ought to look like, and that it was necessary to make changes that fit with those expectations. But I took enough of a break in between then and now doing school and such that
I forgot about that. Back in the day, I would have rolled most changes into Modified and left a more standard version out in Default. In this case, though, I'd been looking at the 'new' version so long that I'd thought I'd gotten used to it, and I suppose I forgot that it would be a big and unwelcome change for most people, who would have looked at the RAF way more than the LAF over the past few months. Of course, I've already explained the reasoning that led to the experiment in borderless design, and the alternating backgrounds (that hadn't already been there before that) were a pretty natural result of that, but even the post backgrounds/etc. in general were already a deviation from expectations, that wouldn't have made it into Default when I was maintaining Default/Modified branches.
Maudie gave the most on-the-mark feedback, which led to my understanding what went wrong with the 'new look', when she mentioned that the theme looked very "modern". I'm not sure that was what I'd intended to do when I set out on the upgrade project -- my style is typically "retro" -- but even so, it crept in along the way, especially when I gave up on borders for the sake of perfectionism and getting something out the door.
There are a few areas left where it could stand some improvement, but overall I think things look very much like how they're going to look, and if I never worked on it again, I wouldn't be too disappointed at this point.
I have noticed that when you've got a new PM there's a pop-up asking if you want to open it in another tab, but when you click 'ok' it does nothing. Just fyi.

I've been experiencing this issue for a while. It's because the pop-up blocker prevents the new tab from opening.

This post is directed at the second point you addressed. It relates to the fact that of the 3 promotions, which where made to fill the vacancies left by Tsukuyomi and James, only 1-Jukka is very active on this forum. Daniel and Nova are fairly inactive- this can be seen by looking at the fact that they haven't been online in weeks and they weren't particularly active these past few months either, based on their post history. Now please don't misunderstand me, I have nothing against them either personally or as staff members but given their limited activity I think it maybe worthwhile to have some new staff members promoted as well, preferably from a pool of active members. I think a crucial component of keeping a forum active is an active and robust staff. I speak about this based on my experience with the long patrol forums (I understand that particular case was somewhat different as the main admin, Martin who approved all ne registrations became inactive and thus new members could not register) and on some other non-Redwall related ones too. Once the staff becomes for a lack of a better word "limited" it can definitely serve as a catalyst for the forum following course.

Old topics won't be deleted. Instead, we'll be moving where some of them "live" so that things feel a bit fresher and more organized.
As for the updated staff list, you just looked at the staff board before I was finished with the changes, that's all! The rest of these changes will be rolled out over the next several days!

I have mixed feelings about that. From one point of view, it would be nice to let the members elect the moderators, but there were some mock elections for "Cellars president" a few years back, and it was a real big mess. The losing candidate ended up leaving the forum soon afterwards.

While I like the idea of one day getting to mini elections and campaigning for these positions, I don't think we should do that yet. For now, the staff team will pick who to extend the offer(s) to. But if you're interested, it doesn't hurt to say so!

I know I'm late, but I still think it should be mentioned that holding elections gets into a popularity issue. Say, for instance (and since it's relevant to me), that an election is held for the fan works section. This occurrence already presents two less than ideal situations. 1.) Everyone is allowed to vote, even though this section is not populated as regularly in the same manner as say the general boards (thus resulting in relatively low-contribution members in said area possibly being elected) 2.) The vote is restricted to the afore mentioned lower number of frequenters of the boards which leaves little in the way of votes. Either way, the results will be unsatisfactory.

In terms of staff appointments: these are pretty big decisions to make, so it will likely be a fair bit of time before we settle on a candidate (or candidates). These things can take some time (leave no stone unturned and all that). We have heard your opinions and nominations and we are factoring them all in, just have a bit of patience.
In terms of staff tasks: we are getting through things bit by bit, some you might have noticed and other things you wouldn't have seen. :)

I, unfortunately, do not own it. It only came with Build Your Own Redwall Abbey Kit. Like I said, if anyone wants a copy, they have to hope someone's selling their copy online, as it was never sold on its own.

The Front Lawns is a strictly social board, outside of the Orchard being a more refined personal projects board (that DOES count posts). The post count feature is supposed to give some measure of the depth of a members' contribution to the forum, not a "hee hee number go up" fix. With that in mind, silly and social posts don't trend towards this contribution mindset.
I can see where you're coming from, and I personally don't care one way or the other whether the Front Lawns counts posts, but saying that post count equals "contribution" basically implies that the people that don't post outside those topics aren't contributing to the forum, which I find to be a bit of a mean-spirited outlook.
If instead you mean that, by doing this, only posts on topics more directly related to Redwall or Brian Jacques in general are counted, then that makes plenty of sense.
I hear you Kade, but think about it in a slightly different context. Humans are wired to think that bigger is better. This mindset is not necessarily bad or wrong, but it does tend to drive people to pursue quantity over quality. In the context of critical discussion, one post with a well thought-out point is worth more to the community than a dozen posts of "I agree" or just 2 smilies. If discussion is allowed to devolve into chatroom banter, what's the difference between the forum and our Discord server? We need to promote a healthy forum culture, and that culture cannot be made of 100% Cellars content. The silliness of the Cellars has its place; the Cellars. When that silliness starts to spread out into other areas of the Forum, it needs to be curtailed.

I don't see how just removing the post count will fix that though, I don't think people go to the front lawns with cellars content to explicitly gain post counts. A universal message cooldown would be an interesting endeavor I'd be willing to explore more

Many people don't have access to the discord, and the cellars keeps the forum as an open place for folks, especially those attempting to navigate and understand thing when their new. If the cellars were not active, there would be even less activity in the other areas of the forum. And the cellars and discord chat are certainly different beasts altogether, and do not serve the same pourposes. The discord is a chat, the cellars is still a forum area.

Hi, forum Discord server owner here. The "Redwall Abbey Community Forum Server" is not officially affiliated with the forum - It never has been, never will be. The original creator was not staff at any point, I received ownership of it well before my promotion here, and the staff team has always maintained that the two are to remain separated. If you'll notice, at the bottom of the server rules, there's a note about that, and rule #3 in the server is:
Quote3) Do not bring outside arguments to the channel nor take server arguments to the forum.
So basically no, the server is not considered an extension to the forum in any sort of official capacity.
Part of the decision to remove the post count from the Front Lawns wasn't necessarily to fix the problem - Rather, to stop rewarding the problematic behavior. Some members have wished to get high post counts and "beat" the top posters, yet their main post counting board is the Front Lawns and over the past year or so post quality has gone down so massively that I've seen only smiley faces posted multiple times - Not to mention the multiple times members haven't even been sure of what board they were in. The Front Lawns are a place for personal discussion with depth, meant to be separate from the craziness of the Cellars. There isn't really a
reason for it to be post counted. It's not that we're approaching it from the angle that if you only post in the Cellars you don't contribute to the forum, it's that we're trying to keep the craziness contained to the proper place. (Not that fun isn't allowed in the Front Lawns, just that fun and spammy fun are two different things)
Focus has overall shifted: It's not "This board is post counted, I should take an extra moment to look at what I post to make sure I'm contributing" it's "oh hey my post count goes up when I post here" if that makes sense.
Makes sense to me.
I will say though that the part regarding members not realizing they're posting in the Front Lawns I believe simply stems from hitting the "unread posts" link and just responding to all the threads they've posted in before. On there, it is still listed what part of the forum the thread is in, but that info is in much smaller text and isn't as readily apparent. For folks that predominantly post in the cellars, it's a pretty easy mistake to make.
