Title: Redwall - The Game
Post by: Astral on July 13, 2011, 05:21:15 PM
Come one, come all, to the world of Redwall.

Hello, I'm a computing student in Uni, and I've been a bit bored during these holidays. I had a dream about Redwall a while back :O .. And wondered wouldn't it be awesome for some simple 3D PC Redwall game. (I remember seeing the "A tale Of Redwall" by Benny Wrights, but it seems he gave up in 2009 after contact with him was lost). Anyway so I went about researching about 3D programming last week, and after trying a few engines I found I was satisfied with one finally.

The game is currently in development at very early stages, if anyone has experience in 3D development, I kindly ask you to help me :D .. It took me 3 entire days, 30-40hours to create the 4 outer Redwall walls. I need help creating for character models, so if you have any experience in 3D modelling (in 3DS MAX etc), contact me :'(

I am a very good programmer, so programming it self isn't a problem. I'm coding the game in C++

(If it is ever completed, it will obviously be released for free, because I hate paying for stuff too :L .. And I would try and involve networking in it. This will be sort of like an RPG)

Here's screen-shots of it so far:

Ok I'm in need of a little help. What do you think the other building, next/combined to great hall should be. I've though of 2 main rooms, the armoury on the bottom floor. And the infirmary, which I think would be appropiate by combining 2 rooms to make it bigger.
- I numbered each room, so you can easily post your opinion here.

- A single room is not that big, but it would be big enough to fit 2/3 beds
(http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/6616/otherbuildingsingleroom.jpg)
- I also think that in Redwall, they have big rooms, with lots of beds in.

Anyway opinions?

What's C++  ? I'm not sure how I feel about it,  Just I remember Mr. Jacques never liked video games. I'd probably play it though

That is so, so, so cool, words cannot describe. I'm afraid I don't know anything about... well, anything, or I'd be all over this. :( Hope you're able to complete it!

Why is it always right after I stop doing something that something good appears for that something?

After I stopped eating Hot Pockets, they immediately come out with new versions.
Same exact thing with fast food, and (as proven above) computer games.
Sigh... :-\

True, At our house we don't play many video games but I think I might play this one as it is a PC game. Everyone in our family is alloud on the computer for about 30 min. a day so I could divide that time between that and this...

I think it is a cool idea and would be used by a lot of people. I would love to help but I only know enough code to add pictures to a website.  ;D

The main "Abbey" has been built. I think it's a bit big, but only after I realized that Redwall castle might be too small, oh well it will just mean a smaller out-ground.

Still remaining are the bell tower, and other buildings.
And obviously the pond, orchard etc..

Hey, I created a blog which will display all my current progress: http://redwallthegame.blogspot.com/ (http://redwallthegame.blogspot.com/)

Yes it will be an RPG. If I get enough time, I may implement networking to allow group quests or something, but alas we I am in very early stages of creating. It will be a downloadable game as in .EXE not a flash game.

No I did not create it on Call Of Duty.

I'm still looking for 3D modellers, I've had some people talk to me on other sites, but I await there responses.

Post by: Osu on July 17, 2011, 04:29:57 PM
Yay, a blog! *stalkstalkstalk*

As for rooms and the infirmary in particular, I've always pictured it as one big, long room with beds lined up both sides. Or maybe small rooms, more kinda like niches in the walls, for the beds. ANYWAY I vote combining the small rooms to make a large one. :)
I pictured the dormitories as smallish rooms that fit four or six beds or bunk beds each, as well as a few smaller, one-bed, rooms along the way.

I'm not sure about most the dormitories, but I think the dibbuns have one where they all sleep together. It will be interesting to see the floor plans come together, I have always been interested in how Redwall is laid out.

There's a good deal of dormitories on two floors of the Abbey. And in addition there's at least a couple other areas with rooms, and them some separate rooms in addition somewhere near to the dormitory. Many elders have their own rooms, in addition to most guests.

What are your full plans for this?
Title: Re: Redwall - The Game ###Need your HELP - on room allocation###

Well this building will be much smaller compared to the real Redwall layout, which is why we must miniaturise everything but keeping all the main stuff in-tact.

To be of the greatest help, I need you to tell me numbers-room:

E.g.
10: Dormitory
11+12+13+14: Big  Dormitory
etc etc etc

As you can see from the screenie in the first post. A room is not exactly very big (however on the top-floor, there are more rooms since there are no entrances), anyway compensation to the small-sized building must be given. I personally don't think there are any dormitories on the ground floor, they were always upstairs from what I recall.

The stairs going downstairs from the ground floor, would be to cavern hole.

-- Here are the basic plans I'm going by (remember the building had to be moved around to be allocated in the space, whilst still allowing room for grass/vegetation etc):

Correct, the dormitories were on the second and third.

As for size, the Redwall TV series showed there being about 20 beds or so, coming from an image of one in Mattimeo

Yes I have room for an attic, so I can include "Sparra kingdom" but that isn't one of my priorities as of yet.

Well I have the orchard, pond, and there is still quite a bit of room left of open space, where I could add trees and stuff. Which I guess is the garden.

Both incorrect. Trust me, I did research before creating this .. Well also adjusting certain things, such as the the actual abbey is supposed to be facing sideways, but I didn't have enough to do that that. So it like a game of lego, making things fit in the most tightest places, whilst still allowing room for space.

Anyway: gatehouse, is near the end of the wall, it is attached of those mini-shelters on the front wall

It's off to the left of the main gate.
Being contained in a shelter also makes it inside the main gate. By inside, I mean not on the outside in Mossflower. It is not afterall, void of a protecting wall, which would be impractical to more than one standard.

Oh right, then yeah.

My drawn image is a bit wrong, the gatehouse would be in between the end of the wall & the main gate:

I just watched your youtube videos and it looks great! keep up the good work and don't give up! This will be a great game. I would also suggest limiting it to Redwall the book only because that takes up the least amount of space and detail in the whole series. But when you finish this you might have a future creating Redwall games and going through the series. one last thing, dont give it out for free! make some money, man!

You are amazing!! I look at your website all the time! dont give up! i would kill to see this finished!!

  That would be nice.  Badger=strong, Hare=fast, Mouse=weapon master(?), Mole=digger, Vole=?, Hedgehog=strong(?), etc.
Title: Re: Redwall - The Game
Post by: W0NWILL on June 30, 2012, 06:03:20 AM
Yeah, they would have to have weaknesses, like badger, if there's bloodwrath, everyone looks like a vermin in battle. It would be amusing if every thing looked like a vermin. Charge that tree! Maybe mice wouldn't have strengths, but they wouldn't have weaknesses. So nothing's under or over powered. Maybe a hedgehogs power would be prickly :D

I have plans for this game in future. Perhaps, you dear redwall fans, can propose some ideas or some possible things you want to see in the game?

hmmm two storylines mabey?with vermin and woodlanders?and at the end you decide the fate of redwall!

Nice idea! Thank you for response!

Non-linear story elements would thicken the gravy. Of course, how do you see this: one character decide which side he's on or two separate character story, vermin/woodsmen, each one with its own fate?
