Title: Redwall Video Game Kickstarter
Post by: scarlet on April 29, 2013, 04:22:05 AM
Disclaimer: I am not a part of the Soma Games company, the material below does not belong to me, I am only a Redwall fan who is super excited about this project and trying to get more people involved.

AbbeyCraft - A Redwall Minecraft Adventure and community channel to engage and communicate with fans. But that's just the beginning...

(Click play to be taken to their Kickstarter page)

Who says that I am dead
Knows nought at all.
I - am that is,
Two mice within Redwall...

The Redwall Series of books by Brian Jacques has captured the hearts of kids and adults for over 20 years. With over 30 million copies sold around the world, it ranks as some of the bestselling fiction of all time.

We've recently had the remarkable honor of announcing the first ever Official Redwall Video Game. The project is now ramping up, but it will take time - time in which the massive and deeply engaged audience will be hungry for news, images, video, and communication about anything Redwall-related.

Enter AbbeyCraft.
While we develop the Adventure Game we want to give you a way to engage, participate, and access special features like exclusive art, beta programs, development forums and more. And what better channel to use than another game in which building is a core concept - Minecraft.

There is no official blueprint of Redwall Abbey. So our first task in the creation of any kind of 3D game is to layout a full representation of this storied edifice. Given the challenge, we'd be using Minecraft as a prototyping tool anyway which makes for a perfect opportunity to build an adventure map and possibly a multiplayer server. Within that world we can share, communicate and leak news to the people with the tenacity to follow in Matthias' footsteps across the sandstone floors of this mythical structure.

We originally planned to dive right in and get busy creating the full adventure game without any preliminary steps. But then we thought "We want the most important people, the Redwall fans, to have a say in making this something Brian Jacques would be proud of."

And as Minecraft has become a major part of the game community with largely overlapping audiences the fit seemed obvious.

Soma Games is the lesser-known alter ego of Code-Monkeys. As a team we have built over 300 apps and games on several platforms, but primarily for outside clients like Intel, Aruba Networks and Belkin...so it's easy to have missed our name. But this is in no way our first time around the block.

Soma and Code-Monkeys are award winning shops (including a MacWorld Best of Show award and Best UX in Intel's Ultimate Coder Challenge) and sought after speakers at events like Casual Connect, Serious Play and NRB.

Shoring up the Soma Games team, we are working closely with Sean Rubin. Sean has been the official Redwall artist for several years now and the unofficial curator of the canon. His participation is of immeasurable value in making sure we properly convey not just the coarse strokes of the books, but also the fine details.

All of the rewards have been selected to reward the True Redwall Fan. Our biggest (non-financial) goal here is to find and engage the kinds of fans that live and breathe Redwall. We know that this story is so loved, so admired, so formative for many people that getting it right is a big priority. But we'll never be able to do that without the input from fans like you. Did Matthias wear a hood, or just a robe? Was Constance 3 mice tall or 4 - it all matters, and our reward list has been designed to attract the die hard fans who refuse to be left out of the worlds first official Redwall game.

The work behind the larger game has already started in earnest but there is still a lot of work between here and launch day...and funding is only one of the potential threats to the Adventure Game. This is a place where Kickstarter could do
so
much
More.

If this campaign catches a wind like the screams of a hundred eagles and it starts looking like a Double-Fine kind of story, we've still got a ton of headroom here. Those extra funds will go directly and immediately to the Adventure Game game project, opening up levels for extra content, more races, more platforms and just making the generally Bigger, Better and Badger!

Might wanna talk to Gears, we are already running a Redwall server (though I'm not going to say much in terms of its' Geographical accuracy).

Hello Redwallers - I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and say thank you.
I'm with Soma Games and yes, we're the group currently building a Redwall video game and running the Kickstarter for The Warrior Reborn.
Honestly, we were totally (pleasantly) surprised by the response of the Redwall community - our initial goal was meant to be a modest test - we just didn't know how many folks would get behind us.

Obviously I'm a noob here but wanted to make myself available for any questions you might have. Some of the specifics of the game remain secret but I'm happy to share lots of good stuff. And we'd be very, very grateful for your support.

Also a word on pre-existing fan works like the Redwall Minecraft server mentioned in this thread. It would be our hope to collaborate with as many of the loyal fans who have gone before us as much as possible. I don't really know exactly what that might mean in the details but it's our desire to supplement the already awesome work out there than to reinvent a bunch of stuff.

The game won't be out for a year or two, but when it does come out it will be perfectly safe to install onto your computer as long a you download it from a legitimate source.

The boat is a location inside an expansion pack in the game, a side quest with its own new, but fully integrated story.

That page is pretty interesting!  What's the countdown for?

Anyway, I've got a few questions:

- "While we develop the Adventure Game we want to give you a way to engage, participate, and access special features like exclusive art, beta programs, development forums and more."
Does this mean that backers may get a chance to beta test the game?

- How does the forum at the $39 level differ from the information revealed in AbbeyCraft?

- Is "The Traitor's Den" something that will only happen if we meet the stretch goal?  Or would it still be a seperate, paid add-on if the goal is not met?

As far as I can tell the countdown is for the release of some concept art. Those are some great questions you have, I'm wondering about the answers to them as well. Can't wait to see what cryptopur says.

A countdown clock...well it's not for the release of concept art.

By following those instructions I came up with the URL that was posted that takes you to the countdown clock. At the point in the video that this was found the person talking in the video (who I believe is Chris Skaggs aka cryptopur) is talking about the community helping decide what goes into the game and Abbey Craft. I can't wait until we find out what it's counting down to. 1 day 2 hours 38 mins left. :)

I also just noticed that the name of the page the countdown is on is Terribiliter Magnificasti Me Mirabilia. I thought it looked like Latin so I translated it and it means Fearfully Magnified: Wonderful. It could have some sort of relevance, but it's more than likely that it's just Lorem Ipsum.

If by "Loren ipsum" you mean "meaningless Latin filler text" - then...no. It's purposeful.
But to avoid red herrings, it may not be part of the page purpose.

So, the boat page has been updated:
http://www.somagames.com/art/RW/boat.php

And it looks like a puzzle!  Fitting for the world of Redwall. :)

"With mice and mechs and CGDC and who should Chris meet, but Penguin man _____"  and a link saying "Start here (http://themillerbrothers.com/)"

answer

http://themillerbrothers.com/2012/03/of-mice-and-missed-opportunities/

If you enter "Priebe" in the box, it changes to:
OF :: 4

[close]

I have no idea what that means, but maybe part 2 tomorrow will help shed some light on it.

I think some people may be under the impression that the game will be based off of the novel 'Redwall'...or another book.

It's an original tale inspired by the series.

Also, I just noticed the hashtag that was used on the Twitter post on the second page.  That made me chuckle, seeing the hex code for "red" instead of the word itself.

And thanks for the update on Kickstarter.  Good to learn a little more about the progress of the game. :)

Mods, I know this is the discussion thread for the game, but would it be possible for me to make a second thread to compile everything we know about it - information and links and everything - which I'd update regularly?  I think that would help answer questions, having all the information in one place, instead of having it spread out everywhere on this thread and multiple sites.  :)

Well, there's quite a bit not on that page that I've been thinking of.
- A link to the Kickstarter of course
- A detailed explanation of what exactly the Kickstarter is for - they have said that they're mostly funding the game through traditional means, so it's more to gain interest and fund AbbeyCraft, and then apply stretch goals to the game itself
- Stretch goals that they've just announced (Minecraft server, Gatehouse, and Traitor's Den expansion [which would add another playable race])
- They said in the week 1 recap that they're currently planning on three playable races, which they're thinking will be mice, squirrels, and badgers
- They're currently looking at a release date of 9-15 months from now
- The page currently just says "PC/Mac".  They said PC/Mac primarily, tablets secondary, and *maybe* consoles depending on funding.
- On the Facebook page they said yesterday that they'd be doing a contest in the future where the prize is Martin's sword (they view it as the coolest prize possible)
- Each piece of the puzzle at http://www.somagames.com/art/RW/boat.php  ; questions, answers, and clues revealed
- Links to news articles and such

Mods, I know this is the discussion thread for the game, but would it be possible for me to make a second thread to compile everything we know about it - information and links and everything - which I'd update regularly?  I think that would help answer questions, having all the information in one place, instead of having it spread out everywhere on this thread and multiple sites.  :)

All the known information is available on one page...there isn't much that actually is "known" yet.
http://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Redwall:_The_Warrior_Reborn

I think essentially re-posting the information contained on the Kickstarter page (E.g. every update) in the RW page is wholly unnecessary, that's what the Kickstarter page itself is for - and besides, those updates technically ARE for backers of the project. I know everyone out there has at least $1, right?

The week 1 recap information, which we covered in a news article, is not set in stone, as they indicated. It's shouldn't be included in the RW article when that information is subject to change.

The page says "intent for release on Mac, PC, and potentially tablets and consoles" in the very first sentence. That covers the platform release. Mac/PC is the only confirmed two, which is why they are the only two listed in the template. But I know you read the first sentence. ;)

The contest itself hasn't been announced. Just listing that there will be a contest isn't helpful if people can't be directed anywhere.

As the puzzle itself hasn't been finished (and can't be), listing the answers on a public page takes the fun out of solving it for people.

So again, all officially "known" information about the game is in that article. Everything else is hypothetical at this point.

I admit that I missed the news posts; I'm used to seeing things like that on the actual page for similar things on other sites like book releases.  (And I did miss the first line as well.  xD)
My general idea was to combine everything -  not just the stuff on the Kickstarter page, but also blog posts from the Soma Games Site, Facebook, etc.   Even if the information will change, the page can change with it.  (And as far as the puzzle, the idea was to put it behind a spoiler tag, so people don't *have* to look at the answer.)  I've just seen (and created) threads like this on other sites, and didn't know how the wiki page worked, so I thought it would be helpful here.
Perhaps you could link to those news posts on the article page?

So.. What's this riddle Soma Games have been talking about..? I've been attentive to every post on Facebook, but I managed to miss some info about a riddle that's already been solved..

Am I missing something here? Like another site where they post other information? I wouldn't want to be left part out of the information or even the little things they give us. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/somagames/redwall-the-warrior-reborn/posts/471457#comments

If you look through the posts on this topic you'll find all that you need. Links, hints, etc. The most recent piece of the puzzle was released 17 minutes ago, and it's quite a bit harder than the rest.

What happens if we solve it? And can anyone tell me what are the other two words that come after 'Priebe'?

Not sure what this puzzle is about, but it looks interesting..

EDIT: I was able to get the 4th box by typing in:
answer
'hind leg fighter'

The words 'ROSE :: 7' appeared after that.
[close]
...

12 boxes, hidden under puzzles that give out words and numbers.. I'm guessing the numbers are what order the words are supposed to be put in?

It's unknown what happens when all of the pieces are solved. I was thinking the same thing about the end result, but because it's a puzzle I didn't want to post it and "ruin" the fun.  :)

What I don't get is is when it says to click 'start here', and it leads me to the front page of youtube. Is it a mistake?

Usually it gives you a link to the site it can be found on.  I suppose that the answer to part 4 must be somewhere on You Tube.  At least it's possible to guess the answer based on the clue; I wouldn't know where to start on YT! It would be easier if they put a link to a channel or something.

@Firehawke,

That would be cool, to have the option to play offline (solo) or Online (Multiplayer with other people). There would be only missions meant for offline play and online play. But, then that means it wouldn't be fair to the people who play offline because they wouldn't be able to experience the full game.

I wonder what they plan to do.

I thought the expected delivery date of most of the rewards being 2014 should have indicated this. As Ved said, that is pretty fast to whip out a game. Programming takes time, and on top of that they want to do it right by consulting with the community.

Just in case anyone's having trouble getting it to work if you think you have the answer, if you're using Internet Explorer, try turning on Compatibility mode or using another browser.   I was certain I had #8 correct, but it wasn't giving me the answer, only refreshing the page.  Then I remembered that I'd been having trouble last night too, so I clicked the Compatibility mode button and it worked.  (I'm using IE9.)

(By the way, I liked #8.  That one was fun.  Now to work on #7.)

EDIT: Nevermind, it's not just the browser, there's a glitch in the site... I know that the answer for #7 is
Spoiler
Village
(part 3 of Castaways of the Flying Dutchman is "The Village")
[close]
but it still refreshes, no matter which browser I use.

Hmm... Strange, it's working for me. Do you want to PM me the answer you think it is and I can confirm if it's right? That way you know whether or not it's just a glitch.

@dawning - your answer to #7 is correct and I THINK I may have located the cause of the problem.
Let me guess - you're capitalizing Village and on IE?
Try now and see if I've fixed it.

Here's a few hints, I hope it doesn't make it too easy. ;)
Spoiler
#1 refers not to an author but a game creator.
For #2 use your browser's "find on page" ability to look for words in the puzzle.
For #3 Think of the words used and again use the "find on page" ability.
#4 has to do with animation and some kind of "herb".
#5 can be found with a search engine if you do a little bit of editing the last part of the puzzle.
For #6 the search term has changed to "acute costochondritis". What the search term should be is "working element".
#7 I fear it would be too easy if I give much of a hint.
For #8 ctrl + a.
For #9 take a look at WUR.
Quote from Matthias720 The answer to #10 is closer than it at first appears. ;)
Regarding #11, LordTBT runs Redwall Wikia
As for #12, clocks are a funny thing. ;)

Just out of curiosity, for those of you here that helped fund the Kickstarter project, what levels do you choose? I chose Redwall Puzzle Master.
Title: Re: Redwall Video Game Kickstarter
Post by: Dawnwing on May 13, 2013, 08:13:08 PM
I chose The Beauty of Redwall (early adopter), and might move up to the Redwall Insider.  I'd love to do more, especially the $99 levels if they'd still been available, but I'm planning on purchasing a car sometime later this year, so I'm trying to save money as much as I can.

The clues we're given with each answer are really interesting.  I can't make sense of them yet; maybe these and the future puzzles all connect into a huge one?  I've tried putting the second letters into an anagram maker but haven't come up with anything useful yet.  I also was searching for a word-rearranger, to try and see if any order sounds like a coherent sentence, but I can't find one online so I think I'll just write my own after my exams are over.

I'd like to see anything new with Redwall. Unless it was someone trying to continue the series. I don't think that should ever happen. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind new stories in the form of games or TV shows, etc. as long as it wouldn't be considered canon.

I agree, I don't think anyone should touch or add to Brian Jacques works. It would most likely ruin the feel of his stories if a new writer came in.

I'd like to see more of a mature animation of all the Redwall books, starting from Redwall. The kids animation was okay, but it didn't do it enough justice for me.

Well think about it, if Redwall get more awareness, there could be a possibility of a continuation of the Nelvana series or a remake of the animations. But this is just hopeful thinking that I wished were true.

I'd really like to see a serious animation done.

Yeah, that's definitely a possibility. But you also have to ask, what is the reason it went off air in the first place? And is that reason still valid? Anyway, I'm sure there's already at least one topic on this forum with some answers to the plausibility of getting it started again.

Yes,  I'd like to see a more serious movie made.  Using CGI like the Guardians of GaHoole movie, for example, would be a good look for it, I think, just so long as the story is true to the book.  Will it happen? I doubt it.  But I'd like to see it.

Title: Re: Redwall Video Game Kickstarter
Post by: cryptopur on May 16, 2013, 05:22:35 PM
Dear Redwall Abbey folks,

I wanted to share something here that I haven't shared publicly yet and that's where the riddle thing is going.

The first 25 people to solve the final riddle will get an invitation to our launch feast when the Adventure Game launches. Imagine a Redwall style feast with all the recipes from the books piled high. The scents of warm rolls, hot root soup, hogbake...it'll be awesome!

We're planning a 'castle' a huge cake, and cosplay...so something you'll really love.

But wait - there's more. ;)
Of the 25 invitees, one of those will be drawn randomly to have their trip shelled over 'all expenses paid'  that's travel, lodging, the works.
So, just to be clear, it's kinda  a big prize and big prizes require some significant effort. So if you've been feeling like the puzzles are a little tough...there's a  good reason.

There is no expiration date on the puzzles, just it fills up for the first 25 invitees.
Everybody who solves the puzzle will be rewarded with some cool 'puzzle master' SWAG like sneak peaks, Redwall wallpapers, and the like so even if you're reading this months from now - we hope you'll enjoy the puzzles and we'll try to make it worth your time.

@Gabe, when a person finishes the final riddle they'll have their answer validated and, assuming it's correct, it'll ask you to enter basic contact info like name and address, email stuff. That's how we'll keep track = and the first 25 are counted there.

Hehehe!! I got 1,2,3,4,and 9 down! 7 more to go... and then the final~!

Edit: got 8 down! 4 more main puzzles to go!

Any more hints you'd like to give, Ved Cassib? Lol if possible. If you don't that's fine, considering how the circumstances and situation has changed.

I'm stumped on these ones:

"Upon his passing,
THE artist opines,
He wrote not books,
But ____"

"'The Ship' and 'The Shepherd'
are lesser-known tales.
Captioned last in a yarn
'bout a curse and a sail..
(The)"

"We're building an Abbey
sans pixel-art creepers,
but this gear head pwns us
in Minecraft cathedrals."

"From Mouse Guard, Adera,
a tale of Dust,
this writer/designer
has Sean's and our trust.
good luck with that..."

I just need four more please!! >m<

Oh, and the last puzzle seems to refresh my page whenever I click the submit button. Is that just me?

Ugh, I'm late. :C Well, this looks really cool, and even though I don't play video games, I'm curious to see how it turns out. :)

You may have gotten here a little late, but there's still time! There are still 24 more spots for the people who solve the puzzles!

Yeah, this last one's tough.  I'm still stuck on the order of the words.  I did end up writing a program to give me all possible orders of all the words, but when I came back to it after two hours and it was still going, I realized that even though it was giving me hundreds of combinations per minute, it would have to run straight for a good 5 days or so in order to finish, so I stopped it (after all, doing the math and considering that i didn't make it skip duplicates, it would have come up with over 480 million combinations).  I'll have to go back to the old fashioned way of just figuring it out on my own. Maybe just guess at the top.  xD

I think they should reveal a hint a little more, just to help us a tad bit. hahaha..

I've spent many hours on the same puzzle, but no dice. It's kind of a shame that I didn't get anywhere. :/

But I feel reall close though..

EDIT:

At this rate, I don't think anyone is gonna solve the puzzle with the exception of VedCassib..

Most of the information from the last few weeks can just be seen on the Kickstarter page, in the weekly recaps and updates.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/somagames/redwall-the-warrior-reborn

We've also been working on a series of puzzles on the following page; the first 25 to solve the final clue receive invitations to the Redwall game launch feast, one of them being all-expenses-paid.  VedCassib is the only one from here (maybe altogether) to figure it out so far; it's pretty tricky.

good guess, esp. since it seems to be built on that and the unity object engine, which is very cool by the way.  The dev environment is fun to play with and has good demos.  Big file, and takes a beefy processor to run it well, but once you've got it up and running, lots of fun.  I can see how it would work for them.

Sending money online, whether donating or purchasing anything, will involve inputting a credit or debit card at some point.

Kickstarter is a very safe, legitimate site. They actually use Amazon for payment services. There is also a PayPal option if you like that.

It's 2013, online shopping is safe.

Worth noting: If you want to actually play the game when it comes out, you're likely going to have to use a credit or debit card to pay for it online. And if you want to access the Minecraft server, you're going to have to purchase a copy of Minecraft the same way.

According to the definition of "cooperantur". It means to combine or work together with. I've had an idea before that hint was posted, but I'm not sure how to combine them. What confuses me most is the numbers down at the bottom.
Title: Re: Redwall Video Game Kickstarter
Post by: cryptopur on May 30, 2013, 05:21:54 PM
Don't think too hard about it. :)
It just means "work together"
meaning you folks...collaborate.
It was designed to encourage cooperation and at least one piece of the puzzle requires  a minimum of two people to compare answers.

I'm guessing that the "two people" thing is to compare the number it gives based on your location?  Before I noticed the little bar saying "allow somagames.com to use your location", the boxes were blank and I thought you had to enter your own latitudes and longitudes into the box, but no matter what I put into there, I couldn't figure out the correlation between the numbers inserted and the one it gives back.

..and just to be clear from Soma Games
There are no requirements or restrictions from our perspective.

No Gabe The Warrior - you're not required to work with another human though the puzzle was designed to encourage it.

And yes, it's totally within the rules for VedCassib to just post the answer here and then it's a race to see ho can get their names in the fastest...though that would be somewhat against the spirit of the thing.

Somewhere in the middle is the desired result - people hinting, helping, and coaxing one another so everybody has fun.

Alright if that's the case, VedCassib, I will draw you any character in the Redwall Series, (any character that you like) in for the last two answers in the boxes in the final puzzle.

Here's an example of what I can do:

If there aren't any rules prohibiting it, I'll try to get some.

No. A real-life redwall feast. *Drools* My dream. Unfortunately, I'm pretty bad at riddle solving. These puzzles are way above me.

It's been pretty clearly explained in the Kickstarter updates and videos that this will be a real, physical feast, for those who solve the puzzle and/or donated at a certain level. Likely to be in the vicinity of the Soma Games HQ. (Pacific Northwest US, travel + lodging costs are up to the individual)  :)

My guess is somewhere near Newberg, Oregon. Because That's where Soma is located it makes the most sense to me.

I came across the Kickstarter site for this game the other day - wow, looks so good! It's cool to see there's finally going to be a game relating to Redwall. The concept art and sets are lovely - I really admire the attention to detail.

From what I read, will you need Minecraft? I don't really know anything about it and don't want to install the whole shebang just for that part of the game? I'm not a big gamer... sure I'll learn the facts later on. :)

(NB: I haven't read through all 18 pages of this thread yet!)

To play the final product, you will not need Minecraft. AbbeyCraft, as well as the AbbeyCraft server, both utilize Minecraft, however those are for people who donated to the Kickstarter project only.

Those who contributed money and wish to access either of those will need Minecraft, which costs $26.95.

Wow, this sounds like it's going to be great. Sorry I'm so late to the discussion, until a few minutes ago I had never heard of any Redwall game production. I know Mr. Jacques wasn't much a fan of technology, computers, or anything of that sort, but I bet he'd be pleased that his fans, in the technological world they live in today, will get a chance to experience Redwall in a way that may be more familiar to some of them. I myself am not big on video games, but a Redwall one definitely has me interested. I can't wait! Let me just say, THANK YOU SOMA GAMES!
And, um...would somebody mind telling me where I can find these puzzle things you all are talking about? I'm afraid I missed anything concerning that.  :-\

Yes, you will have to pay for it so that Soma Games can make money. As for downloading it, it seems most likely for them to release it as a downloadable game rather than disc. And they have said that they are thinking about releasing it on Steam.

Yes. To play the game, it will cost money. Just like you have to pay for a Redwall book if you want to read it.

You will have to download it in some form of fashion - likely either via Steam, or an App store for your mobile device should it get released that way.

Discs are a thing of the past.

It's 2013, downloading from trusted companies is safe. It's not 1996.

Maybe its not 1996 but I sure am a dinosaur compared to most.  No apps, no smartphone (just one of them dumb ones :P ), no game systems, only a computer.  Sounds like I might be left in the dust on this game release if a Windows computer cannot play it.

I also only have a computer, but I think that we're fine with only this.(Since Skyrim plays on the PC!  ;))

They're shooting for a Windows release. And if you donated to the project, AbbeyCraft will work on Windows.

However, if your computer is quite old, it may not be able to process the graphics efficiently, or you may not have enough RAM to properly run the game. Anything older than mid-00s probably won't cut it.

That's well and good, and I don't debate the exciting advancements; however it doesn't stop all the bits and bobs being made that are then made obsolete (or similar) by the flick of a donkey's tail. All that stuff made for such detailed means, only to have to be replaced so soon after - and where does it go?
Anyway, that's no moan at your opinion. Just some concerns. :)

The feast will most likely be held in the Newburg, OR area because that is where Soma Games is located. But nothing has been confirmed yet.
As for being able to donate and attend, you can do so here: http://www.somagames.com/redwall/redwall-presale.php

No, I didn't just come to be annoying. I was wondering, what language will this game be in? Hypothetically, if it was written in a language a certain Marlfox was able to comprehend, would you allow him to dive into the assets and make mods?

I expect when we get a little farther along we'll post it to Greenlight (if it lasts) and ask your help in getting it voted up.

Don't really know what to think of it. I'm thrilled to see that they've stepped up production, but unless they find some investors, I'm not sure how much kickstarter will be able to support them with. I suppose only time will tell, but until then I suppose I'll throw my bit in!

Thanks for keeping us updated, TBT!

At least they haven't given up yet, gotta give 'em that!

And let's see how the Long Patrol likes it.

Does anyone know what era the game is going to be in?

I believe it's not set in any of the eras, but rather in its own time.

Hi Redwall Abbey - I reckon I owe all of you an update.
Perhaps the first place to start is just to point you to our blog: http://www.somagames.com/somaniloquy/tag/redwall/

And to give you folks some behind-the-scenes info. The investor conversations have gone well. It's a slow process when everybody is excited but it is proceeding nicely. As of today, we're within the last 10% of what we need and have a half-dozen interested parties...so we're feeling pretty secure in the way this is going.

It's been a long road to get from that initial Kickstarter to this point - and a lot of homework along the way - but it's been so worth it. :)
We recognize that there is a lot of desire, even impatience, to see this wonderful world come to life but the fans have been so supportive of our deliberate but glacial process. :)

Anyway, I suppose it's a fair time to ask any questions - though I wont be able to answer all of them.
For one question above - we're about 90% sure the game will be set within the events of the first book.

Thank you all for working on this project for us :)

The kickstarter was to fund a minecraft mod of Redwall Abbey.

Is this on minecraft or is it a website (browser) game?

This is incorrect. The kickstarter was to fund a fullscale platform game, one of the stretch goals was a minecraft Redwall Server. The server exists , but is stuck in 1.7.2. The full game is under development by Soma Games.

I had heard that some people noticed that when they donated that the funds didn't go towards the game but went to the server instead.

That correction was incorrect. It was actually for just the Minecraft map, but the purpose was deeper than that. It was meant to test the waters to see how well a Redwall video game would be received, and the amount of feedback was enough for them to move forward with the actual game itself. I am of the belief that this is due in no small part to the forum here contributing heavily alongside, the Redwall Wiki. To the best of my knowledge, Soma Games is seeking final funding for the project from private investors, so we should hopefully have news soon (as in a month or two, at least). Fingers crossed!

No.  The Minecraft Redwall map was an extra, side project.  An actual video game is being worked on.

Unfortunately, the video game isn't finished yet. :-\  The creators' website is here (http://somagames.com), though I don't know when it was last updated. :P  But anyway, you can rest assured that it is still being worked on and is actually gonna go through!

Update from Soma. Looks like they're finally getting a proper start after dealing with pain-in-the-tail litigation.

QuoteIt's been a while, but we're still plugging along. Yes it's still in development, and yes everything is going really well. There were many many hoops to jump through on the legal side of things that required a lot of time and energy, but now we're off and running.

In the meantime, we need to hear more from you. What do you want Redwall to look like? What is it about Redwall that is absolutely essential? What would you not be able to do without? We have regular discussions going up on Facebook, so come talk to us!

A few suggestions:

•Give players the opportunity to show mercy to enemies, and allow this to affect how the characters you interact with perceive you.

•Along with the events of the main story, include randomly-generated encounters, such as vermin camps or woodlander houses.

•Include lore books.

I am very eager for this game's release. I haven't read any of the Redwall books for years, and it's great knowing that there will be a way for me to continue those adventures I read about oh so many years ago.        .....Or I could just re-read the series, but high school hates free time, so...... bummer

Hi all! Just wanted to let you all know that Soma Games has been making headway on game development after many months of legal hurdles. They have been posting screenshots, renders, concept art, and videos on their company Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SomaGames/), as well as the game's official development Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RedwallGame/).

They have just posted a video of their Cavern Hole render using the in-game engine. Check it out! ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCqeKPf2Zks

What style of game is this going to be? Will it have a multiplayer mode? Is it server-based? I'm really hoping it turns out to be like ToonTown / has the community style of early Runescape. I'd love to make my own character and roam about, if this is the case!

I'm under the impression it won't be multiplayer/server-based. However, if those are things you're looking for, AbbeyCraft has been this way for years.
